The Rosette is an artificial Rose. In a wider sense any ornament of a circular shape. Rosettes may be considered either a Free-ornament or a Panel-ornament. In its most important application rosettes served as the Boss in the centre of Romanesque and Gothic ribbed Vaultings. Rosettes take on many shapes such as round oval square diamond or variations of each. They are decorated with roses acanthus leaf flowers and shells. Rosettes are found on Furniture Gates Doors and as the centre pieces of modern Ceilings.
